USB #4
In the previous #3 episode I was talking about the Off-page SEO, what does that mean and represent, and how to implement it in your business, and what does it suppose to do. And today we are going to tie it all together by going into some of the examples how to do SEO, how you make money by doing SEO, and what’s actually happening in front and behind the scene.
How Do You Actually Make Money With SEO?
This is the question that all beginners who are dipping their toes in the search engine optimization and overall online marketing world get. Because everything I talked about until this moment may sound great but unless it all clicks in head and the light bulb turns on, all of it is just a theory.
The reason why so many people ask this question is because they don’t understand how it is all connected and what is going on behind the scenes. After 8 years of doing SEO, I can tell that it’s like an alchemy science where are basic fundamental protocols that must be followed but the rest is on imagination and experimenting.
So here is the answer.
You don’t actually make money with SEO, but rather using SEO techniques and strategies as a vehicle to get you where the customers and buyers are.
1. Website’s Conversion Rates
This is where we must distinguish between getting high value potential customer and converting the prospect into buyer because those are 2 very different things.
In other words, the website or sales page where you want the visitors to take some kind of action, which is usually to buy something, must be proven to convert otherwise all the SEO work to get high quality visitors would be worthless.
The SEO will not make you any money if the conversion rates are terrible, remember that!
I’ve been talking about in the On-page SEO basics episode #2, how important it is to have high quality content that provides some kind of real value to the website visitor, otherwise they bounce, which is negative for SEO. And this is the same principal.
Testing Your Conversion Rates before doing any SEO to the website is critical.
Now, when you know that your website converts visitors at the decent rate (the % rate varies depending on the type of business and product), but getting somewhere between 1% – 3% is considered good.
2. Money Keywords
The Next step is doing the thorough keyword research to allocate a bunch of keywords on many difficulty levels. This means that you must use some kind of tool like Google Keyword Planner, Keywords Everywhere, or Keyword Titan, and run a search based on your main money keyword which gives you many different suggestions that people type in search engines and search for, as well as how many monthly searches, the level of competition and difficulty, and how much advertisers pay per click for a particular keywords.
Now you will see that more searches per month keyword get the higher competition and difficulty. It’s because most of the people go after those keywords and advertisers pay a lot of money to get a click. Those are not the kind of keywords that we are interested in for now, maybe a few month or even years from now.
What we are looking for here are long-tail phrases compiled of a few keywords that are specific and hold the buyer intent value. Even though it many times shows 0 searches per month, there are definitely more than 0 I can guarantee that. The main benefit of finding these low competition and low volume keywords is that it’s easy and fast to rank for them, sometimes in days or weeks.
So by picking up these low hanging fruits, you are building up the SEO foundation for your website and the website will gradually grow on traffic, slow from the beginning but it can quickly add up. Later, once the site is ranking for some keywords and some authority is established, you can start optimizing for those high volume search keywords that everybody wants. But you don’t have to, you can continue picking up the low hanging fruit.
3. Prepare the Content
After you’ve finished your keyword research and came up with at least 20 – 30 keywords, the more the better, then you can start working on the content around those keywords.
And about the content, I don’t mean just a five hundred word article, but longer articles, different types of videos, pictures, PDFs, or maybe even an audio. In terms of SEO, written text, the article is a basic fundamental thing, but for example video generates much more engagement than text, and much faster. So it’s a great idea to include both if you want to optimize your website.
Whether you create the content yourself or get someone else to do it for you doesn’t matter. What matters is that the content is unique, relevant, and provides value.
You will need the content for your main website as well as for your off-page SEO strategy that I talked about in the previous post, so go ahead and check it out if you haven’t yet.
